  2. Anonymous,
Thanks for your comment. I'm glad to hear that. Your feeling fulfills my primary desire for making the list.

  3. Thanks for posting this great trip in the time machine Richard. The Heat played Kenilworth Junior High in 1968 and I'll never forget the show. I remember they had 2 drummers and dressed like Paul Revere & the Raiders.

And Mel Degan & Privilege played Bonnie Doon HS in 1972 with their rendition of Jesus Christ Superstar. Also loved Willie & the Walkers - Edmonton bands never received the national recognition they deserved.

  4. I haven't checked out the site for awhile and I love the new photos. I had forgotten some of those bands and the pictures brought back some great memories of light shows, Benny's Sunday night Northlands gigs and those marathon arena gigs with 3 - 6 local bands opening for headliners.

    Keep it coming.

  5. SHAME TREE recorded at Norman Petty Studios in Clovis, NM in March 1969. "Junior Saw It Happen / My Little Buttercup" was released on Quality (1938X) and is a real rarity!

Great site...returns many memories. I attended a British pop group show (can't remember the name) in the 60's where the opening act was 'Paul Evans and The Strangers'; they performed a version of 'The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt' that was without peer. What happened to them? Thanks from Mississauga.

  8. I remember going to the Bonaventure Hotel parking lot for outdoor concerts of The Chieftones.

I also used to have a single of The King Beez, titled 'Gloria'.

    1. Don't remember the Chieftones but I remember the Heat. I danced on the roof of the Bonnie in 1966 as a "gogo dancer"

  9. I used to see the Chieftones on CFRN a lot as a kid. I thought they were pretty cool.
The Chieftones are a difficult group to get accurate info on. Some sources say they were an Edmonton based band and some say they were based in B.C.
Because I strive for 100% accuracy, until I hear directly from an original bandmember They will have to remain off the list. The same is true of The Family Dog. Some folks say they were Edmonton based but all of their promo material boasts of them being from Vancouver.
The King Beezz are on the list and we're proud to have them. You can purchase a Best of The King Beezz CD from www.kingbeezz.com It includes Gloria.

    1. The family dog lived next door to my grand mother on about 90 street & 124 ave. I used to sit on the porch and listen to them practice. A few other local bands were Buckeye, Mirage, Palladin

    Thanks

  11. Just found this site and it's great. I was lead singer for the Kingbeezz and never realized that so many years later there would be this much interest.I hope to contribute to the site and include some of the great folk groups and singers that were part of the 60s like The Kopala Trio, The Cellar Dwellers, The Patmacs, Hans Stamer, Donna Warner ans so many more. Just did a guest co-host with Pete the Rocker on his show, The Shoebox out of the University of Alberta radio. If anybody is interested some websites to check out are www.kingbeezz.com, www.patmacs.com and my own present one www.carl-peterson.com. Love to hear from some of you.
    Cheers, Carl

  12. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Some of the bands listed played at the high school dances that I attended (but sat back enjoying the music).

  13. Thanks Pat, I'm glad that you enjoyed it. Make sure to check out the Facebook page (the link is on the website.)
Also check out Edmonton's Rock & Roll History Page. It's a little less focused but has some great memorabilia. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Edmontons-Rock-Roll-History-Page/102639849808941

  15. Thanks Richard for the list and your diligence. Many fond memories reading this over again in 2018. A host of good times at the Highlands Community Hall, Lakeview and Alberta Beach dancing to the Nomads, Wes Dakus and the Rebels and being involved myself a little earlier with Bill McCalder and The Barons. Cheers, Wes Shennan

  16. A CHRONOLOGY of EDMONTON BANDS 1950 to 2010 by Raymong Biesinger
This is a 24x36" one-colour silkscreened chart showing the complex evolution of the Edmonton music scene over six decades. It started as an exercise in community memory; local musicians were asked to report bands they'd been in, their membership, and years of activity. 157 higher profile groups were picked from that info and given a slot on one of the chart's 20 lanes. On it you'll find such semi-known Edmonton hit makers as Cadence Weapon, Barry Allen, Willy & the Walkers, SNFU, Darkroom, the Wet Secrets, the King Beez, Brewtals, and Troyka. While a few earlier versions of this exist, this one was assembled, fact-checked, and re-typeset in June of 2016 in a format much easier to store and frame.

Screenprinted in an open edition by Unik at 24x36", one colour on archival white 80lb Cougar smooth Cover paper. Dimensions include a 1.5" margin. Signed and dated on reverse.

The bands listed are as follows: ???, Allan Lee & the Peppermints, the Angus Park Blues Band, A Noyes, the Antiquators, Any Wonder, Baffin Island Party, Barry Allen, Big House, Bing Jesus, Blank Generation, the Brave & the Foolish, the Breaking Point, the Brewtals, the Brinkman Bros., the Buicks, Bullyproof, Cadence Weapon, Captain Nobody, Captain Tractor, Casa Doran, Cat’s Squirrel, Chinchilla, Choke, Circle Widens, Cleats, the Clones, Coloured Rain, Corb Lund Band, Daisy Hill Puppy Farm, Darkroom, the Diefenbakers, the ditto girls, Django Beats, Dick Tater, dorsty grimpitst & the molobaditz boys, Down Syndrome, the Draggnetts, the Drastics, Dr. Ball, Dundeeville Players, Dwayne Cannan, the Eddie Chwill Band, Edgeware Road, Elastic Band, Euthanasia, the Famines, Famous Last Words, Fatback, Faunt, the Flicks, the Floor, Foes of Respiration, Fractal Pattern, Freezone, Gaby Haas & the Barn Dance Gang, Ghost Shirt Society, Gobble Gobble, Godfrey Blague, Graeme & the Waifers, Granfalloon, Greyhound Tragedy, Haiku, Hippychick, Hot Cottage, Hot Panda, Hunted Mind, Idyl Tea, the Imagineers, the Imperials, International Dateline, It’s Us Inc., James & the Bondsmen, Jan & the Ortegas, Jerry Jerry & the Sons of Rhythm Orchestra, the Johnson’s, Jr. Gone Wild, k.d. lang & the reclines, the King Beez, Klondike Jazz Band, Lennie Richards & the Nomads, Little Daddy & the Bachelors, the Lords, the Mad Bomber Society, the Malibu Kens, Manna, Martha Strange, Mary Saxton, Michael Rault, Minstrels on Speed, isdemeanor, the Models, Modern Minds, Molly’s Reach, the Naked & the Dead, Natural Gas, Neo A4, the Nerve, the Nomads, No Mynerz, No Rebate, the Nowhere Blossoms, Old Reliable, One House Blue, the Operators 780, Our Mercury, Outdoor Miners, Playboy ‘50s, the Pleasure Monks, Pot-a-toes, Privilege, Psyche, Psychedelicatessen, Radio City Riot Squad, Rock & Roll Bitches, the Rock-a-tunes, the Royal Family, School, the Secretaries, the Shades, 7 & 7 Is, Shout Out Out Out Out, Silent Movies, Slow Fresh Oil, the Smalls, the Smarties, S.N.F.U., Social Code, Sons of Adam, Southbound Freeway, Suicide Commandos, Sundance, Sylvester Stretch, Les Tabernacles, Tacoy Ride, Ten Second Epic, This Fear, the Thieves, Top Cat, the Top Hats, Troyka, the Umbrellas, Unsound, Warm Jets, the Warp Factor, the Wednesday Night Heroes, Wes Dakus & the Rebels, the Wet Secrets, Whitey Houston, Whitsundays, the Wicked Awesomes, Whoremoans, Wilfred N. & the Grown Men, Willie & the Walkers, the Wolfnote, Za Za.

  17. This web page is a godsend. We looked at it last nite with my kids and grandkids to see what the scene looked like in the 60's and 70's.It is an excellent example of the talent we had at the time.
Thanks, Mike Perlynn, formerly with Midnight Hour and the Twisted Image.
